Advanced Dementia and controversial feeding

My sister, Ellen, has Down Syndrome and is dying of gall bddlaer cancer. Her end-of-life care is being directed by a fabulous hospice team who are devoted to her comfort and well-being. She is living in a nursing facility and they have insisted that Ellen did not approve the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order. I have power of attorney so I’m ultimately able to make Ellen’s health care decisions and I did override their claim. These recommendations (feeding tube) are generated by a system that is responding automatically; not examining individual situations and by doctors that also do not have the information that must be presented to families about their choices. It is critical that you obtain a strong advocate to coach you on your options. We all must anticipate and plan for end-of-life decision-making by preparing directives and by communicating with our families and physicians. The scenario described in the New York Times article is not unique to the family members of down syndrome individuals.
